KOMIYAMA STUDIO 2021  “SCALE”

SCALE - NEW DIMENSIONS OF TIMBER ARCHITECTURE

Wooden buildings are being re-evaluated both in Japan and abroad as society moves towards reducing its environmental impact. The rediscovery of wood as a renewable resource has been prompted by international efforts to promote sustainability. Large-scale wooden construction is one of the frontiers where various technological developments are being competed. However, the important question is not only “how” to achieve this technologically, but also “what” to achieve. For example, the W350 Project (Sumitomo Forestry), a wooden skyscraper, and the LOOP50 Project (Obayashi Corporation), a wooden cyclical city, propose the functions that architecture can perform precisely because of its scale, including its relationship with forests and society (for more information on the W350 Project and LOOP50 Project, please refer to the October 2018 issue of Shinkenchiku, Special Issue on Wood). We want to reconsider not only the physical scale of large, small, high and low, but also the scale of the framework within which architecture is perceived.

In this studio, we will take
1. Interactive learning through guest lectures on diverse perspectives on wood and architecture,
2. and At the same time, through reading and research, we will deepen our thinking about the size of architecture.
3. The final product of the studio will be a proposal for a new scale of wooden architecture and its appropriate form.

The final product of the studio will be submitted to the international competition "Build The (Im)impossible" (organized by Rothoblass).
